What is the minimum speed I can charge at?

This page contains instructions for configuring
chargers with Charge HQ
Please refer to our
charger listing for details on supported models and charger specifications.

The minimum for Tesla EVs (with any charger) is:

  • 5A on single phase
  • 6A (being 3 x 2A) on 3 phase

The minimum when using a smart charger is:

  • 6A on single phase
  • 18A (being 3 x 6A) on 3 phase

The minimum values are dictated by the charger manufacturers.

Some 3 phase smart chargers support both manual and automatic and switching to single phase charging to allow slower charging speeds. Charge HQ currently does not support switching smart chargers between single phase and 3 phase.

Charging at lower speeds also becomes increasingly inefficient. Whilst charging, most EVs will be awake, with on board computers and thermal management systems for batteries operating. These systems consume power. At very low rates of charge, the percentage of power going to these systems becomes substantial, reducing the efficiency.

If you want to continue charging whilst solar production is below the minimum level, you may consider using solar + grid mode in the solar tracking settings.
