Can I charge from the grid whilst exporting solar?

Some energy retailers are currently offering free (or very cheap energy) during the middle of the day whilst still paying feed-in tariffs for exports. As an EV owner, you might like to charge from the free/cheap grid energy whilst still getting paid for your solar production. In Australia (and many other locations), where energy meters are configured on a “net metering” basis, this is not possible.

The electricity meter from your utility only records grid imports and grid exports. It doesn’t know about or record your gross solar production.

If solar production exceeds home energy consumption, you will be exporting energy, with exports measured as:

  • grid export = total solar production - total home consumption

If solar production is less than home energy consumption, you will be importing energy, with imports measured as:

  • grid import = total home consumption - total solar production
