Some energy retailers are currently offering free (or very cheap energy) during the middle of the day whilst still paying feed-in tariffs for exports. As an EV owner, you might like to charge from the free/cheap grid energy whilst still getting paid for your solar production. In Australia (and many other locations), where energy meters are configured on a “net metering” basis, this is not possible.
The electricity meter from your utility only records grid imports and grid exports. It doesn’t know about or record your gross solar production.
